Our Mission

Wellness Council of Arizona (WELCOAZ) strives to be the recognized leader and resource for worksite health promotion in Arizona. WELCOAZ collaborates with healthcare providers, community leaders, businesses and institutions to improve the health of employees and their families.

The Wellness Council received its original charter from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Health Insurance Association of America in 1985. We believed that advancing health insights, lifestyles and supportive cultures are invaluable tools in the work place.

The Wellness Council of Arizona evolved from the Wellness Council of Tucson in 2003.

President and Chief Executive Officer

Daniel A. Johnson

Daniel A. Johnson has worked in the health and wellness industry for over 45 years. Starting at the age of 17 as a spa attendant with European Health Spas, Dan went on to own and operate over 20 athletic clubs and fitness centers. In 1995 Dan was appointed as the Executive Director of the Wellness Council of Arizona. For the past 29 years, Dan has advanced the non-profit organization which now serves over 200,000 employees with fitness, nutrition, stress management and self-care support and health coaching in just under 500 worksites. Dan is now the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Wellness Council of Arizona.

Dan began providing group trainings and motivational workshops in the early 1990s. He has spoken to every segment of the American workforce including faculties of higher learning institutions, government and judicial workers along with many civic organizations. Dan specializes in motivation, human dynamics and healthy living. In 1999, Dan became certified in the Practice of Mindfulness and began offering education and experiential trainings in mindfulness and breath work. Dan is a monthly guest speaker at the world renowned Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Tucson, AZ. He offers topics such as “Health and Happiness are in Your Hands”, “Discovering the Gift That is You!”, “The Awareness Approach – 12 Insights to Mindful Living” and “Take a Breath Break”. Part of Dan’s work has focused on trainings related to individual peak performance through optimal health and lifestyle. He has conducted executive trainings and presentations in this area for public and private entities, manufacturing, marketing and sales organizations. Dan has a special interest in organizational development and has facilitated numerous team building and communications trainings. He is regularly requested for return appearances due to his energetic and dynamic, entertaining and engaging style. Dan utilizes research and experience with over 40 years of successful organization management to artfully move his audiences towards greater understandings and progressive behavior change.

Dan has been a professional athlete having held national racquetball sponsorships with Wilson Sporting Goods and Ektelon Racquet Sports.

In January of 2022, Dan released a book titled “Twelve Insights for Mindful Living – An Awareness Approach to Health and Happiness.”

As part of Dan’s community involvement, he has worked with Senior Olympics, spoken with many civic groups, and has served as Training Chairman of the Explorer Boy Scouts of the Catalina Council. Dan served as a member of the Wellness Councils of America’s Board of Directors for three years.   Dan has served on the Southern Arizona Advisory Board for the American Diabetes Association, the Arizona Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Health along with the advisory board for the Arizona Department of Health Services’ “Healthy Arizona 2010”. Dan has served on the Leadership Council of the Arizona Living Well Institute, the Arizona Diabetes Program Leadership Council and the YMCA Diabetes Coalition. In 2003, the National Partnership for Wellness was formed and Dan became the President.  The Partnership is dedicated to advancing health promotion through collaborations in worksites and communities for individuals and their families.
